Unit 2: Perspective: What Stance Does The Writer Take In The Text?

In this unit, we have been taught to develop our skills in the ten areas introduced in Unit 1. Three reading have been prepared for this unit. In the first reading, we have been given an article title, “Battling the bullies”. The stance taken in the text is the main focus in this unit. It is to find out more about how the stance tells us about the writer’s belief and the implication for understanding the text.

Next, is the “Language, perspective, ideology” part where Lee D (1992) explain a set of key terms including perspective and ideology, and he also shows how these notions are connected to the choices made by the writer in the text. For this part, an article written about events in South Africa has been used as an example.

For the third reading, “Texts and textualities”, the Dunhill advertisement have been used as an example to analyze the choices and patterns in a text.

By learning the three part of the reading, we have learnt that the perspective of the writer should be understood as it will influence the readers about the issues that been highlighted in the end. Besides that, the importance of the written text that been using the right structure, vocabulary and words have the power to make the readers belief with what the writer are trying to convince.

For this unit, it is Yuyu, Ika and Dalila turn to present on their understanding of the topic. As a started they have already apologize as they also do not understand much about the topic. But they manage to give a little bit of information regarding reading “Battling the bullies” because they understood more on that part. Sir Humam than take place and explain more until all of us clears about this unit.
